But if you suffer from <a href=\"https:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/MultimediaRoom\/VideoLibrary\/?e=0#player:138,w1414\">insomnia<\/a> or any other condition that regularly interferes with your sleep, there might be worse consequences for your health than just drowsiness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe longer you suffer from insomnia, the higher the risk is of developing <a href=\"http:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/MultimediaRoom\/VideoLibrary\/?e=0#player:138,v1043\">Type 2 diabetes<\/a> or a <a href=\"http:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/Search\/85,P00341\">cardiovascular disease<\/a>,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/providers.osfhealthcare.org\/provider\/Kaninika+Verma\/1465216?_ga=2.245410884.1763394625.1613493248-1273132657.1595447876\">Kaninika Verma, MD<\/a>, the clinical sleep director for OSF HealthCare who sees patients across Central Illinois.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Your health at stake<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>With prolonged insomnia or other sleep issues, your body is under stress and releases stress hormones. These hormones are useful for your fight or flight response to severe fear, a short-term need. But some stress hormones cause your liver to release glucose, and when this happens chronically, your body develops a resistance to insulin, leading to Type 2 diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>Other hormones can affect your appetite, leading to increased hunger, more eating and weight gain, which increases your risk of heart disease and other serious health issues.<\/p>\n<p>Type 2 diabetes is progressive, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/providers.osfhealthcare.org\/provider\/Sonia+Gajula\/1463730?_ga=2.246539460.1763394625.1613493248-1273132657.1595447876\">Sonia Gajula, MD<\/a>, an endocrinologist at OSF Medical Group \u2013 Endocrinology &amp; Diabetes in Peoria. It evolves over time. Her job as a physician is to stop that progression with a multidisciplinary approach that includes sleep health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA big portion of our treatment for diabetes focuses on lifestyle modification, and that should include sleep care,\u201d Dr. Gajula said. \u201cPatients with Type 2 diabetes often have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/blog\/are-you-at-risk-for-sleep-apnea\/\">sleep apnea<\/a> as well. Your ability to sleep is actually a recognized indicator of your health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSleep is essential for the way our body functions,\u201d said Dr. Verma. \u201cWe need to take care of our body as a whole, and sleep is a keystone to that whole process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re having difficulty sleeping, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/blog\/symptoms-that-should-never-be-ignored\/\">recognizing it<\/a> is the first step. Scheduling an appointment with a sleep doctor should be your second step.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, you should try to figure out why you have trouble initiating or maintaining sleep. Some people are simply predisposed to sleep troubles. Some may have slept well until something happened in their life, causing a change to their ability to sleep. Others have habits or behaviors \u2013 like afternoon napping or late caffeine drinks \u2013 that make healthy sleep more challenging.<\/p>\n<p>What do you think is causing your sleep troubles? Take your theory and speak with a sleep doctor about it. There are many different approaches, and a combination of approaches that the professionals can help you use to improve your sleep, which should help you feel better and be healthier.<\/p>\n<p>One thing you can do on your own is to help train your brain to fall asleep in your bedroom by removing electronics \u2013 smartphones, laptops, televisions \u2013 from the environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have essentially invited the whole world into our bedroom with all this technology,\u201d said Dr. Verma. \u201cOur mind is boundless, so now we have to learn to retrain our brain to put up
