It\u2019s easy to think that not much has changed since the initial start of COVID-19<\/a>. The virus still kept many people at home this past year. Cases have continued to fluctuate. And it doesn\u2019t appear that the illness will leaving us any time soon.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But we also have many things to celebrate. Countless people around the world have been vaccinated. A majority of kids are back in school. And\u00a0numerous individuals have gone back to visiting family, traveling and living like as close to usual as they can.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As 2021\u00a0comes to a\u00a0close, we want to reflect\u00a0on\u00a0the projects our teams within OSF Innovation\u00a0have\u00a0achieved\u00a0to transform education, care and services for this new normal. They are accomplishments that will better help our communities and the people we serve.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hospital at home<\/h2>\n

In the beginning months of COVID-19, OSF Innovation leaders had the foresight to consider how the virus would impact hospital care. With that, a multidisciplinary team came up with an idea to help OSF HealthCare treat both COVID-19 patients and non-COVID hospital patients at home.\u202fUsing\u00a0an agile approach to project management, the group designed\u00a0the OSF Digital Hospital at Home and\u202fAcute\u00a0COVID@Home\u202fprograms to treat people using video conferencing and other technology.\u00a0The learnings from this project have been transitioned to OSF\u00a0OnCall\u00a0Digital Health<\/a> for further development. You can read more about this story\u00a0<\/span>here<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Addressing health inequity<\/h2>\n

While OSF Innovation is working on a variety of projects to improve community health delivery and wellness outcomes in Chicago\u2019s most underserved communities,\u00a0we want to celebrate two\u00a0initiatives that launched this year. First off,\u00a0OSF HealthCare\u00a0announced a partnership with\u00a0the University\u00a0of\u00a0Illinois Chicago (UIC) to establish the Community\u00a0Health Advocacy (CHA) program. The grant program will fund projects between UIC faculty and OSF Mission Partners that\u00a0address health and wellness challenges in urban communities.\u00a0Read the full story\u00a0<\/span>here<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

OSF\u00a0also\u00a0announced a partnership with Sustainable Wellness through Innovation, Technology, & Collaborative Health, an organization launched by\u202fCity Tech Collaborative (City Tech).\u00a0As part of the\u00a0collaboration, SWITCH and OSF HealthCare are exploring\u00a0the possibility of expanding and commercializing\u00a0OSF\u00a0CommunityConnect\u00a0(OCC), a\u00a0software platform to improve access to\u00a0health care, education\u00a0and disease prevention in\u00a0the Chicago area.\u202fIt\u2019s also being\u00a0used\u00a0in partnership with\u00a0the Medicaid Innovation Collaborative\u202fto create solutions that improve access and quality of care for Medicaid patients throughout the state.\u00a0Learn more about this partnership\u00a0<\/span>here<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bringing Mission Partner ideas to fruition<\/h2>\n

The OSF Innovation Studio\u00a0was launched to help Mission Partners bring their\u00a0health care solutions to life and eventually to market.\u00a0The\u00a0OSF Innovation Studio\u00a0has received more than 125 concepts since 2019 with some moving on to full invention disclosure or the commercialization process. Nearly twenty are\u00a0progressing through a product development process. And\u00a0the OSF Innovation Studio\u00a0has filed its first non-provisional patent in the US, Canada and Europe.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One solution the team is helping to commercialize was developed by two OSF nurses.\u00a0They created a\u00a0medical device table\u00a0that\u00a0surgical teams\u00a0use to\u00a0pull any implant information they\u00a0may\u00a0need during a surgery.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In a year\u00a0and a half, the\u00a0OSF Innovation Studio\u00a0helped the small team refine their concept into a web-based application that allows for a more robust and editable database. Surgical teams within OSF Saint Francis are now using the Implantable Device Matrix app on a regular basis.\u202fThe inventors are working with the OSF Innovation Studio\u202fon the opportunity to file a provisional patent on their idea. Adapting to changes in education<\/h2>\n

Jump Simulation Mission Partners did a lot of work behind the scenes to ensure clinicians and students were getting the practice they needed to fulfill training and continuing education requirements\u00a0during COVID-19. That included brainstorming ways to deliver quality learning opportunities while adhering to restrictions and guidelines by the\u202fCenters for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With simulation specialists taking the lead, they developed on-site learning protocols, adopted digital platforms and used teleconferencing to serve as many learners as possible \u2014 all without sacrificing the world-class learning experiences we are known for.\u00a0Take a look at some the\u00a0<\/span>actions<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Jump took to continue delivering world class education.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mapping out the future of neurosciences<\/h2>\n

Leaders at\u202fOSF HealthCare Illinois Neurological Institute\u202f<\/a>wanted a clear vision for the future of its service line. As a result, the group worked with Performance Improvement\u00a0to map out the next seven to ten years of the Neurosciences Service Line using the future back strategy process. This approach gives an organization the opportunity to define its future and then work backward to implement the actions needed to follow that path.\u00a0Learn more about this process\u00a0<\/span>here<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking forward to next year<\/h2>\n

We are likely to feel the ongoing effects of COVID-19 well into 2022. That paired with the need to address ongoing and new challenges\u00a0will require us to develop\u00a0a multiyear strategy.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the next year, we will develop a future back plan that will guide our future endeavors.\u00a0In the meantime, we\u00a0are equipping our Mission Partners with the competencies\u00a0they will need to design our future.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
