If they have Type 2, their body has become resistant to insulin and doesn\u2019t react to it the way that it should. Left untreated, diabetes can lead to numerous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/blog\/diabetes-puts-people-greater-risk-heart-disease\/\">health problems<\/a>, including heart disease, kidney disease, vision problems, nerve damage and even death.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Who does it impact?<\/h2>\n<p>Type 1 diabetes usually occurs in children and young adults and is typically thought to be caused when the body\u2019s immune system mistakenly attacks the insulin-producing cells within the pancreas. Type 2 usually develops in adults who are over 40 years old or overweight, but it\u2019s becoming more common in children due to increased <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/blog\/five-simple-ways-to-fight-childhood-obesity\/\">obesity rates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Children diagnosed with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes are usually around 13-14 years old, but a diagnosis for Type 1 can come much earlier.<\/p>\n<h2>What are the symptoms?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cType 1 and Type 2 diabetes share the same symptoms, but they typically differ in how quickly those symptoms appear,\u201d Dr. Yousuf said. \u201cType 1 symptoms in children usually happen suddenly \u2013 like over the course of a few hours or days. On the other hand, Type 2 symptoms tend to appear gradually over the course of a few years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Key symptoms to watch for:<\/p>\n<div class=\"alignright cta\">\n<p>Seeing signs in your child?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/providers.osfhealthcare.org\/search?unified=pediatrics&amp;sort=networks%2C%20relevance\"> &gt;See your pediatrician.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Extreme fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Feeling hungry despite eating<\/li>\n<li>Increased thirst<\/li>\n<li>Frequent urination (including bed wetting by potty-trained kids)<\/li>\n<li>Weight loss without trying<\/li>\n<li>Fruity smelling breath<\/li>\n<li>Irritability or behavior changes<\/li>\n<li>Blurry vision<\/li>\n<li>Cuts or bruises that heal slowly<\/li>\n<li>Very dry skin<\/li>\n<li>Tingling, pain or numbness in the hands or feet<\/li>\n<li>Belly (abdominal) pain<\/li>\n<li>Nausea<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Actions for parents to take<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cIf you notice any of these symptoms in your child, it\u2019s important to call their pediatrician immediately and take them in to have their <a href=\"https:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/MultimediaRoom\/VideoLibrary\/?e=0#player:138,k1965\">blood glucose level<\/a> checked right away,\u201d Dr. Yousuf said. \u201cA simple blood test will determine if diabetes is the cause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If diabetes is diagnosed, it\u2019s important to follow the doctor\u2019s instructions for monitoring the child\u2019s blood sugar levels, taking the prescribed medications, <a href=\"https:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/MultimediaRoom\/VideoLibrary\/?e=0#player:138,k1917\">eating a healthy diet<\/a> and getting proper exercise.<\/p>\n<p>While there is no cure for Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 accounts for the vast majority of diabetes cases and can sometimes be reversed through a good diet and exercise regimen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you\u2019re a parent, the thought that your active and healthy child could have diabetes is probably the furthest thing from your mind.
