Going through more than one tampon or pad every two hours is a good indicator that your bleeding is heavier than it should be.

Painful sex

There are many reasons why you might experience pain during sex. But if you experience this in conjunction with other key symptoms, it may point to endometriosis.

Either way, talk with your doctor to address painful sex. It shouldn’t be painful, and there are things you can do to alleviate the pain.

Infertility

Infertility among women with untreated or unmanaged endometriosis is high. About 24-50% of women experiencing infertility are likely suffering from endometriosis whether they know it or not.

“Endometriosis affects 5%-15% of reproductive-age women, and about one-third of them will have infertility problems,” Dr. Foster said.

If you’re experiencing infertility, bring up the possibility of endometriosis with your doctor. The sooner you and your doctor can determine what may be causing infertility, the sooner you can pursue possible solutions.

Gastrointestinal issues

Endometriosis can cause inflammation, affecting gastrointestinal function, especially if the uterine tissue grows near the digestive tract. That’s why diarrhea, constipation, nausea and painful bowel movements may signal endometriosis.

Why is it so hard to diagnose endometriosis?

It takes an average of six to 10 years of experiencing symptoms before a woman gets diagnosed with endometriosis.

One reason for this may be how difficult it is to diagnose. There’s no simple endometriosis test to diagnose the condition.

“To definitively diagnose it, you have to have surgery,” Dr. Foster said.

It’s hard for doctors to justify surgery unless they’re fairly certain endometriosis is the cause of the symptoms. That’s why Dr. Foster recommends keeping a detailed account of your menstrual cycle.

Download this chart and track the symptoms of your menstrual cycle to help your provider make an informed endometriosis diagnosis.

“The best thing is to keep a very detailed menstrual calendar,” she said. “Rank your pain level every day and write down your symptoms, such as when the pain started, how long it lasted and whether it came before or after the onset of bleeding.”

Treating endometriosis

Endometriosis can seriously harm your quality of life. So, how do you treat it? Natural treatments, surgery and medication are all options for treatment.

The natural treatment of endometriosis involves taking herbs that can help reduce inflammation and pain.

You can learn about your menstrual cycle and how endometriosis affects you with a quality charting system, like the Creighton Model FertilityCare™ System for natural family planning. Learning to chart your cycle gives you more control over your health.

Your provider can suggest natural supplements or prescribe medications. You take these during certain times of your cycle to balance hormones and alleviate symptoms.

Other treatments like NaProTechnology™ (Natural Procreative Technology) provide cooperative medical and surgical treatments that can be used to address gynecological abnormalities like endometriosis.

Endometriosis occurs when uterine tissue grows in places that aren’t the uterus.
