{"id":1578,"date":"2016-11-23T18:20:40","date_gmt":"2016-11-24T00:20:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/blog\/?p=1578"},"modified":"2018-10-29T11:22:08","modified_gmt":"2018-10-29T16:22:08","slug":"bring-medical-students-peoria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/bring-medical-students-peoria\/","title":{"rendered":"Bringing the best medical students to Peoria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The relationship between the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ini.org\">Illinois Neurological Institute<\/a>\u00a0(INI), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.osfsaintfrancis.org\">OSF Saint Francis Medical Center<\/a>\u00a0and the <a href=\"http:\/\/peoria.medicine.uic.edu\/\">University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria<\/a> (UICOMP) has always been a close one, with INI specialists practicing at OSF Saint Francis while serving as faculty and leadership for the campus\u2019s neurology and neurosurgery departments. Now, the organizations are relying on their relationship to draw the most promising neurology and neurosurgery medical students to Peoria for medical school and, hopefully, encourage them to establish a long-term practice in Peoria.<\/p>\n<h2>Fellowships and residencies<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1643 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/studentblog-300x200.png\" alt=\"Medical Students\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>Together, UICOMP, INI and OSF Saint Francis are increasing the campus\u2019 neurology and neurosurgery offerings, hoping to prompt the best medical students, with an interest in neurology and neurosurgery, to opt for the College of Medicine\u2019s Peoria campus. For the INI, this is an opportunity to ensure the neurology and neurosurgery services at OSF Saint Francis remain strong.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What makes the difference between one medical center and another is smart people,\u201d says \u00a0Patrick Elwood, MD, of the INI. \u201cThe best way to get smart people is to bring them in as students, and keep them as residents, and keep them beyond that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would like to bring the strongest students to this campus, ultimately to enhance our residencies. We are going to offer more electives, more mentoring, and more research opportunities, with significant funding for medical student research.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Mentoring for medical students<\/h2>\n<p>Mentoring is a vital service to students, according to Elwood. INI and UICOMP have the resources to really benefit students, in the form of experienced, connected and respected faculty members. Mentoring is not just about guiding the decision making of students, it\u2019s also about knowing the opportunities available to those students and making sure they get those opportunities.<\/p>\n<h2>Research<\/h2>\n<p>The INI has also set up a robust medical student research fund to support both short-term and long-term research experiences. There are laboratory opportunities involved in research around brain tumor, cerebrovascular, brain and spinal cord injury and degenerative brain disease.
