What should you look for? Many different types of cancer can impact different parts of the body. So, how can you tell if you have cancer? Well, there\u2019s no way to know on your own. You\u2019re going to need to speak with your health care provider.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne isolated symptom doesn\u2019t necessarily mean you have cancer,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/providers\/mary-stapel-1464087\">Mary Stapel<\/a>, MD, a physician at OSF HealthCare. \u201cBut if any symptoms persist past a couple of weeks, that\u2019s when you should talk to your primary care provider.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also important to remember that some cancers early on have no visible signs \u2013 which is why <a href=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/guidelines_for_early_cancer_detection.pdf\">getting your cancer screenings<\/a> is so important. Screenings can often reveal signs of cancer before any symptoms begin to show themselves.<\/p>\n<h2>Common cancer warning signs<\/h2>\n<p>If any of the symptoms listed here persist beyond a couple of weeks, speak to your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/providers?query=primary%20care\">primary care provider (PCP).<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Lumps, bruises and other skin changes<\/h3>\n<p>If you notice any unusual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/blog\/found-a-breast-lump\/\">lumps<\/a>, bumps, swelling, easy bruising or other unexplained new markings on your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/services\/specialties\/cancer\/conditions-treatments\/cancer-programs\/skin-cancer\">skin<\/a>, you should speak with your PCP. Changes to your skin are part of what Dr. Stapel calls a \u201cbig category\u201d for signs of cancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there is any easy bruising or new bleeding and you\u2019re not on blood thinners, that\u2019s something to monitor,\u201d Dr. Stapel said. \u201cYou may just see red specks, not even full-on bruise. Even jaundice can be a sign of cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Weight gain or weight loss<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cCancer can decrease your appetite, leading to unplanned weight loss,\u201d Dr. Stapel said. \u201cBut, with some cancers, we see weight gain because the tumor compresses your digestive tract, which causes abdominal bloating as you retain fluids.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWeight loss is more common, but quick weight gain also should be looked into.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having no appetite, feeling nauseous or vomiting often could all be signs of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/services\/specialties\/cancer\/conditions-treatments\/cancer-programs\/gastro-cancer\">gastrointestinal cancer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Muscle weakness<\/h3>\n<p>Fatigue is natural, but if you can\u2019t shake it with some restful sleep, it might be a sign something is wrong.<\/p>\n<h3>Trouble regulating your temperature<\/h3>\n<p>Fevers, night sweats, feeling flushed or feeling cold \u2013 any persistent difficulty with regulating your body\u2019s temperature can be suspicious.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Going\u2019 problems<\/h3>\n<p>Any persistent change in your typical bladder or bowel movements should be evaluated by a health care provider. If you find yourself unusually constipated, your stool\u2019s not the normal size, color or consistency, if it\u2019s pencil-thin or there is blood in your stool, those are all possible signs of cancer.<\/p>\n<div class=\"alignright cta\">\n<p>How is cancer detected?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/blog\/early-detection-your-best-chance\/\">Knowledge is power in the fight against cancer.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Also, blood in your urine or pain urinating should be checked out.<\/p>\n<h3>Bleeding<\/h3>\n<p>Coughing up blood is one possible sign of cancer, and for women, post-menopausal bleeding can also be a sign.<\/p>\n<h3>Throat pain or coughing<\/h3>\n<p>Hoarseness or choking on food could be a sign there is an issue with your head or neck. Also if you develop a persistent new cough or shortness of breath, it could be a sign of cancer.<\/p>\n<h3>Pain<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cMany cancers don\u2019t present with pain initially,\u201d Dr. Stapel said. \u201cBut, headaches, breast pain or pain under the arms or in the groin where lymph nodes might enlarge &#8211; those are reasons to seek further care.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Neurologic changes<\/h3>\n<p>If you develop sudden double or blurry vision \u2013 especially if the change is accompanied by new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/blog\/how-to-know-if-you-need-to-see-a-specialist-for-headaches\/\">headaches<\/a> \u2013 you need to speak to your doctor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When cancer is caught in the early stages, health care providers have better treatment options available.
