Anytime you notice a change in your bowel habits, you have something out of whack with your digestive system.<\/p>\n<p>Our bowel movements are a good indicator of our overall health. <a href=\"https:\/\/providers.osfhealthcare.org\/provider\/Jomel+S.+Labayog\/1462474?name=Jomel%20S.%20Labayog&amp;sort=networks%2C%20relevance&amp;from=search-list\">Jomel Labayog, MD,<\/a> hematologist and medical oncologist with OSF HealthCare, explains how bowel movements affect our bodies and can indicate colorectal cancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are many causes for changes in your bowel movements, including dehydration, poor diet and illnesses,\u201d Dr. Labayog said. \u201cJust because you experience a change doesn\u2019t mean you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/cancer\/services\/colorectal\/\">colorectal cancer.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cColorectal cancer is slow growing and can have little to no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/blog\/colorectal-cancer-essential-screening\">symptoms<\/a>. Our colons remove the remaining water and extract final nutrients and electrolytes before passing the waste to the rectum for discharge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur colons work much like a factory conveyor system.\u201d Dr. Labayog said. \u201cIf the conveyor isn\u2019t working efficiently for some reason, you will see a disturbance in output. A change in the way waste is formed and expelled.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>What does colon cancer stool look like?<\/h2>\n<p>Colon cancer poop is hard to define, but there are telltale signs. A tumor can cause a narrowing of the colon or rectum, inhibiting waste movement or blocking the absorption of nutrients and electrolytes. Dr. Labayog said this could lead to:<\/p>\n<h2>Inhibited movement of waste<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Constipation not relieved by over-the-counter medications lasting more than a few days or a bowel obstruction<\/li>\n<li>Pebble stool or pebble poop \u2013 Hard nuggets or lumps, resulting from excess moisture removal from the poop being stuck in the colon for too long \u2013 constipation<\/li>\n<li>Pencil-thin or narrow stool \u2013 Stool that has squeezed past the obstruction in the colon or rectum<\/li>\n<li>Never empty \u2013 Feeling like you still need to have a bowel movement even though you just did<\/li>\n<li>General discomfort \u2013 Ongoing gas pains, bloating, abdominal pain, fullness or cramps resulting from the waste being inhibited in the colon<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>A change in normal function<\/h2>\n<div class=\"alignright cta\">\n<p>Curious about other symptoms?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/blog\/colorectal-cancer-essential-screening\/\"> &gt; Learn more<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Diarrhea not relieved by over-the-counter medications lasting more than a few days, resulting from the colon\u2019s inability to remove water from the waste fast enough<\/li>\n<li>Weakness and fatigue \u2013 Our bodies must have smooth waste processing and disposal. A disruption in the process taxes our bodies, leaving us exhausted<\/li>\n<li>Unintended weight loss \u2013 A result of the body not getting the nutrients it needs, excess waste backing up in our digestive system and stress placed on all organs to compensate<\/li>\n<li>Blood in the stool or bright red rectal bleeding \u2013 Pre-cancerous polyps and cancer tumors are fragile and bleed easily. As stool passes them, an amount of blood vessels can mix with the stool, causing dark brown or black stool<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, in most cases, colorectal cancers develop slowly over several years with little to no symptoms. Most begin as a polyp,\u201d Dr. Labayog said. \u201cThe next thing you know, the cancer has spread.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you notice any change in your bowel movements or signs of constipation, you should talk to your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/providers?specialtyfilters=Family%20Medicine,Internal%20Medicine\">primary care provider<\/a>. You\u2019ll feel better physically and mentally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cancer screenings are the key to catching it in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/blog\/know-the-signs-of-cancer-to-catch-it-early\/\">early stages<\/a> when cancer treatment is most effective.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our bowels can tell us a lot about what&#8217;s happening inside our bodies.
