You feel rested, alert and ready to tackle the day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But good sleep quality isn\u2019t always easy to achieve. For some people, they breathe through their mouth, which might lead to trouble sleeping.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mouth breathing can be a nuisance. It can cause a dry or scratchy throat, bad breath and snoring. Some people who have trouble breathing through their noses while sleeping turn to a practice called mouth taping.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People tape their mouths shut while sleeping in order to force themselves to breathe through their noses. And while over-the-counter mouth tape for sleep product is sold, it begs the question \u2013 is it a safe and effective practice?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Is mouth tape dangerous?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mouth taping not only doesn\u2019t help you to breathe through your nose, it\u2019s also highly dangerous. It can cause obstructed breathing and create other more serious sleep disorders like obstructive sleep apnea and sleep disruption.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou&#8217;re supposed to breathe in and out through your nose, but mouth taping is not safe at all,\u201d said Kaninika Verma, MD, clinical sleep director at OSF HealthCare. \u201cThis is nothing a physician would ever recommend to a patient.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Why people use mouth tape<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not uncommon to breathe through your mouth when you\u2019re sick or stuffed up. You don\u2019t need to resort to taping your mouth closed. Taking medications can help unclog that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"alignright cta\">\n<p>Need to talk to a professional?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/providers\">Find a primary care provider<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People often use mouth tape for snoring, as well. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/why-do-people-snore-answers-for-better-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johns Hopkins Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, about 45% of adults snore occasionally. For those people who have trouble sleeping because of snoring, there may be something more going on. But mouth tape isn\u2019t a solution for reducing snores.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If mouth breathing is a chronic problem you\u2019re experiencing, talk to your doctor instead of turning to this unsafe practice. Your doctor can help you find safe and effective solutions for how to sleep with your mouth closed without tape.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Finding the reason for mouth breathing<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Verma, mouth breathing is a symptom of a bigger issue. It\u2019s more important to figure out why you\u2019re sleeping with your mouth open and get to the bottom of that issue than it is to force yourself into nasal breathing with tape. Some things that may be making you breathe through your mouth include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Snoring<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Natural mouth breather<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Blocked nasal passages<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Enlarged tonsils<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Enlarged adenoids<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you&#8217;re having issues with your sleep, waking up multiple times throughout the night, having issues with falling asleep or staying asleep or with snoring \u2013 those are the questions that need to be looked at to figure out what is really going on,\u201d Dr. Verma said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Solving sleep disruptions<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/blog\/four-steps-to-help-you-sleep-better\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">good sleep<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is essential to our health and overall well-being. If you\u2019re not getting good sleep, mouth tape isn\u2019t the answer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talking to your primary care provider is the first step. If they find there\u2019s an underlying sleep problem, you may need to see a sleep specialist. These specific types of providers can help determine what is interfering with you getting restful sleep, and how to correct it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re afraid of seeing a sleep specialist for fear of having to go through a sleep test, don\u2019t panic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere&#8217;s so much more to sleep medicine than just sleep tests. It&#8217;s actually having a conversation as to what is going on,\u201d Dr. Verma said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A sleep specialist can evaluate your symptoms and help determine if you\u2019re dealing with a bigger problem, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Trouble quieting your mind or anxiety<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Snoring<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Insomnia<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sleep apnea<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Allergies<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Nasal congestion<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Where you get your health expertise<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Verma warned against getting your health and medical advice online and on social media platforms. These \u201csolutions\u201d are often just fads \u2013 people doing things for entertainment \u2013 not good medical advice from a professional.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBe very cautious and very careful what you believe,\u201d Dr. Verma said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of the day, it\u2019s best to address any and all health issues with your provider, someone who is trained to address your medical concerns and understands you and your health history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you have an issue \u2013 any health care issue \u2013 please reach out to your primary care provider.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s easy to tell when you get good sleep.
