Here\u2019s why\u2014and how\u2014to get it just right.<\/p>\n<h2>The newest key to success<\/h2>\n<p>For more than a decade, the AHA has emphasized seven important strategies to improve heart health. They are:<\/p>\n<div class=\"alignright cta\">\n<p>Ready for better sleep?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/blog\/four-steps-to-help-you-sleep-better\/\">Follow these 4 tips<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ol>\n<li>Getting enough physical activity<\/li>\n<li>Eating a nutritious diet<\/li>\n<li>Not smoking<\/li>\n<li>Maintaining a healthy weight<\/li>\n<li>Controlling cholesterol<\/li>\n<li>Stabilizing blood sugar<\/li>\n<li>Keeping a handle on blood pressure<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In a brand-new update, AHA experts added sleep duration to this list. All together, these heart-healthy strategies are known as Life\u2019s Essential 8\u2122.<\/p>\n<h2>Why sleep matters<\/h2>\n<p>Slacking on sleep\u2014or overdoing it\u2014can cause a wide range of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/blog\/prolonged-sleep-troubles-can-increase-your-risk-for-diabetes-heart-disease\/\">negative health effects<\/a>, from depression to cognitive decline to heart disease.<br \/>\nGetting just the right amount, meanwhile, leads to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A stronger immune system<\/li>\n<li>A brighter mood<\/li>\n<li>More resilient cells, tissues, and blood vessels<\/li>\n<li>A sharper brain, with enhanced focus, memory, and problem-solving<\/li>\n<li>Lower risk for\u00a0 chronic diseases<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Poor sleep harms your heart specifically by affecting risk factors for cardiovascular disease. For instance, your blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol all rise with poor rest.<\/p>\n<p>Most adults need seven to nine hours of sleep each night, while babies and kids need even more.
