But now, the milk aisle at the grocery store has more milk options than ever before.<\/p>\n<p>With all of the milk alternatives available, you may wonder what the best milk to drink is.<\/p>\n<p>Noelle Park, a clinical dietitian at OSF HealthCare, explained what the healthiest milk to drink is and what the best milk alternatives are for people who may not be able to consume dairy products.<\/p>\n<h2>Reasons to avoid dairy<\/h2>\n<p>Some people avoid cow\u2019s milk and cow\u2019s milk products for a variety of reasons.<\/p>\n<h3>Dairy allergy<\/h3>\n<p>For those with an allergy, they may break out in a rash or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/atopic-dermatitis-eczema\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20353273\">eczema<\/a> after drinking milk.<\/p>\n<h3>Lactose intolerance<\/h3>\n<p>Lactose intolerance is an inability to fully digest sugar in dairy products. For people who are mildly lactose intolerant, they may experience bloating, cramping, diarrhea or gas after consuming dairy products.<\/p>\n<p>For people who are lactose intolerant, there are some solutions that make having dairy possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have lactase pills that help in providing the enzyme to digest the lactose,\u201d Park said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"alignright cta\">\n<p>Ready to create a balanced diet?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/providers?specialtyfilters=Family%20Medicine,Internal%20Medicine\">Talk to a primary care provider<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Celiac disease or irritable bowel syndrome<\/h3>\n<p>People with celiac disease or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/irritable-bowel-syndrome\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20360016\">irritable bowel syndrome<\/a> must watch what foods and drinks they consume. They need to take extra care in their diet and avoid certain things to manage their conditions.<\/p>\n<h3>Chronic kidney disease<\/h3>\n<p>People with chronic kidney disease should watch how much cow\u2019s milk they drink due to high levels of phosphorus and protein.<\/p>\n<h2>Milk options<\/h2>\n<p>Plant and nut milks are available as a non-dairy alternative for cow\u2019s milk. So, dairy milk is a good way to get all the nutritional value you can from milk. Dairy milk is usually higher in calories and sugar.<\/p>\n<p>Getting good nutritional value from milk substitutes for cow\u2019s milk can be a tradeoff.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/Library\/NutritionFacts\/76,16120-1\">Soy milk<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Pros: High in protein and vitamin A<\/p>\n<p>Cons: Not a significant source of calcium<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>127 calories<\/li>\n<li>10.9 g protein<\/li>\n<li>1.23 g sugar<\/li>\n<li>93 mg calcium<\/li>\n<li>135 mg phosphorus<\/li>\n<li>304 mg potassium<\/li>\n<li>1499 IU of vitamin A<\/li>\n<li>4.7 g total fat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Almond milk (unsweetened and calcium fortified)<\/h3>\n<p>Pros: Low in calories, high in calcium<\/p>\n<p>Cons: Not a significant source of protein<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>39 calories<\/li>\n<li>1 g protein<\/li>\n<li>2 g sugar<\/li>\n<li>482 mg calcium<\/li>\n<li>6 mg vitamin E<\/li>\n<li>2.5 g total fat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Rice and oat milk<\/h3>\n<p>Pros: Low in fat and calories<\/p>\n<p>Cons: Low in protein and nutrients<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>115 calories<\/li>\n<li>7 g protein<\/li>\n<li>288 mg calcium<\/li>\n<li>9 g sugar<\/li>\n<li>2.4 g total fat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/Library\/NutritionFacts\/76,12118-1\">Coconut milk<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Pros: High in phosphorus and potassium<\/p>\n<p>Cons: Not a significant source of calcium or protein, high in fat<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>445 calories<\/li>\n<li>4.5 g protein<\/li>\n<li>40 mg calcium<\/li>\n<li>216 mg of phosphorus<\/li>\n<li>497 mg of potassium<\/li>\n<li>0 IU of vitamin A<\/li>\n<li>48 g of total fat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Other nut milk<\/h3>\n<p>Cashew, walnut, hazelnut and macadamia milk are less common nut and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/blog\/adding-plant-based-food-to-your-diet\/\">plant-based<\/a> milk alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>Typically nut milks are high in fat and calories, but they\u2019re also high in essential nutrients, like iron and vitamins E and D (if they\u2019ve been fortified).<\/p>\n<p>These milk options aren\u2019t right for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose lactose-free milks were really created for people who cannot tolerate cow\u2019s milk due to allergies or for being lactose intolerant, and other reasons,\u201d Park said.<\/p>\n<h2>Healthiest milk to drink<\/h2>\n<p>Ultimately, cow\u2019s milk is the healthiest to drink if you can tolerate it. It has the most nutritional value.<\/p>\n<p>Cow\u2019s milk has many health benefits, such as helping to improve muscle mass and bone health. For regular milk drinkers, three cups per day is the standard. You can also get that equivalent in other dairy products, like cheese and yogurt.<\/p>\n<p>Low-fat, skim or 1% cow\u2019s milk are healthier options compared to 2% or whole milk.
