Some people receive just one type of treatment, while others receive a combination. Understanding the basics can help you feel more informed and included in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/blog\/self-awareness-in-cancer-treatment\">choosing a treatment plan for your goals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe use biopsies of tumors and genetic testing to determine what type of treatments patients might be able to receive,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/providers\/ashley-darin%20messmer-1462925\">Ashley Messmer, DNP, APRN<\/a>, at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/services\/specialties\/cancer\">OSF HealthCare Cancer Institute<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p>Ashley explained how chemotherapy, radiation therapy and immunotherapy work and answered common questions like chemo vs. radiation, immunotherapy vs. chemotherapy, and whether these treatments are the same or different.<\/p>\n<div class=\"alignright cta\">\n<p>Consult with a Cancer Expert<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/services\/specialties\/cancer\/patients-families\/request-appointment\">Request an Appointment<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Chemotherapy<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/services\/specialties\/cancer\/conditions-treatments\/treatments\/chemotherapy\">Chemotherapy, often called chemo, is a group of powerful medicines<\/a> that kill cancer cells or stop them from growing. Because chemotherapy travels through the bloodstream, it can treat cancer cells almost anywhere in the body. It is given through infusion, injection or oral pills.<\/p>\n<p>Chemotherapy may be used to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kill remaining cancer cells after surgery<\/li>\n<li>Shrink tumors before surgery<\/li>\n<li>Stop cancer from growing<\/li>\n<li>Treat cancer<\/li>\n<li>Work alongside radiation or immunotherapy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cChemotherapy attacks cancer cells in your body, but it can attack healthy cells, too,&#8221; Ashley said. &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/will-i-ever-feel-normal-after-chemo-treatment\/\">Those healthy cells will eventually grow back<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chemotherapy and radiation are two different treatments that work in different ways. <a href=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/chemotherapy-pack-a-bag\/\">Preparing for chemo<\/a> can help you feel more ready for treatment.<\/p>\n<h2>Radiation Therapy<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/services\/specialties\/cancer\/conditions-treatments\/treatments\/radiation\">Radiation therapy uses high\u2011energy beams to kill cancer cells and prevent them from growing<\/a>. Unlike chemotherapy and immunotherapy, radiation is given externally through X-rays, protons or other particles. It is usually focused on a specific area of the body.<\/p>\n<p>Radiation may be used on its own or combined with chemotherapy to improve results, depending on the type and stage of cancer.<\/p>\n<h3>Chemo vs. Radiation<\/h3>\n<p>A common question patients ask is, \u201cWhich is harder on the body \u2013 chemo or radiation?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It depends on many factors. Each treatment affects the body differently, and side effects vary based on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The type of cancer<\/li>\n<li>The dose and length of treatment<\/li>\n<li>The area being treated<\/li>\n<li>Your overall health<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One of the biggest differences between chemo and radiation is that chemo treats the whole body and radiation targets the specific area affected by the tumor.<\/p>\n<p>Chemotherapy may cause more whole\u2011body side effects because it travels through the bloodstream. Radiation side effects are often limited to the treated area. Your care team works closely with you to manage side effects and keep you as comfortable as possible.<\/p>\n<h2>Immunotherapy<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/services\/specialties\/cancer\/conditions-treatments\/treatments\/immunotherapy\">Immunotherapy is a newer type of cancer treatment<\/a>\u00a0that helps your own immune system recognize and attack cancer cells. Immunotherapy can be given through infusion, injection or oral pills.<\/p>\n<p>Immunotherapy is not the same as chemotherapy or radiation.While they all treat cancer, they work very differently.<\/p>\n<h3>Immunotherapy vs. Chemotherapy<\/h3>\n<p>The key difference between chemotherapy and immunotherapy is how they target cancer. Chemotherapy attacks fast\u2011growing cells directly while immunotherapy helps your immune system stop and kill cancer cells.<\/p>\n<p>Immunotherapy may cause fewer traditional side effects for some patients, but it can also trigger immune\u2011related reactions that require close monitoring.<\/p>\n<h2>Other Cancer Treatments<\/h2>\n<p>Other cancer treatments include hormone therapy and targeted therapy. These treatments may be used alone or alongside other therapies, depending on the type of cancer.<\/p>\n<h3>Hormone therapy<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/services\/specialties\/cancer\/conditions-treatments\/treatments\/hormone-therapy\">Hormone therapy slows or stops the growth of certain cancers<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 like breast and prostate \u2013 by blocking or lowering hormones the cancer needs to grow. Unlike chemotherapy, it does not attack fast\u2011growing cells throughout the body. It is usually given through injection or pill.<\/p>\n<h3>Targeted therapy<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/services\/specialties\/cancer\/conditions-treatments\/treatments\/targeted-therapy\">Targeted therapy focuses on specific genes, proteins or pathways<\/a> that help cancer grow and survive. Because it targets cancer cells more precisely, it often causes fewer side effects than chemotherapy.<\/p>\n<h2>Using Cancer Treatments Together<\/h2>\n<p>Cancer care is rarely one\u2011size\u2011fits\u2011all. Many people receive more than one treatment as part of a personalized care plan.
