{"id":2639,"date":"2017-11-16T20:49:01","date_gmt":"2017-11-16T20:49:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/blog\/?p=2639"},"modified":"2024-06-19T10:02:56","modified_gmt":"2024-06-19T15:02:56","slug":"ot-gets-alton-woman-back-on-routine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/ot-gets-alton-woman-back-on-routine\/","title":{"rendered":"Occupational therapy gets Alton woman back on routine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What seemed like a routine morning for Mary Wendle \u2013 watering her flowers before she was off to work \u2013 did not go as planned when she tripped over her hose in the garden.<\/p>\n<p>Mary reached her hand out to catch herself and landed on her left wrist. She instantly knew something wasn\u2019t right.<\/p>\n<p>She visited the Emergency Department at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/hospitals\/saint-anthonys\">OSF HealthCare Saint Anthony&#8217;s Health Center<\/a>, where she was referred to surgeon Bruce T. Vest, Jr., MD.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Vest informed her that she had broken her radius and ulna. These breaks resulted in two things \u2013 a cast and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/services\/patient\/rehabilitation\/programs\/occupational-therapy\">occupational therapy<\/a> (OT).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t sure what to expect because I have never experienced any broken bones before,\u201d Mary said.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0occupational therapists worked with Mary on various exercises such as strength building, dexterity and sensation testing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe OTs were absolutely wonderful,\u201d Mary said. \u201cThey worked with my schedule to ensure that I could make it to all my meetings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mary is the manager of the Pharmacy Department at OSF Saint Anthony\u2019s, so missing meetings was not an option for her.<\/p>\n<h2>Celebrating small successes<\/h2>\n<p>Thanks to the OT, Mary started seeing progress and regained strength back in her wrist. She celebrated small successes such as being able to put in earrings and playing the piano again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe key to success in occupational therapy is doing the exercises you are taught at home and not just at therapy,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s what really works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although Mary was seeing improvements in her wrist, she started to develop shoulder pain from being in a brace.<\/p>\n<p>Mary had developed \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/MultimediaRoom\/VideoLibrary\/?e=0#player:138,v1061\">frozen shoulder<\/a>\u201d which is stiffness and pain in the shoulder joint. This condition requires physical therapy in order to heal properly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can imagine the frustration of hearing I would have to go through another round of therapy,\u201d Mary said. \u201cBut <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/services\/patient\/rehabilitation\">OSF Rehabilitation<\/a> made OT and PT a positive experience \u2013 I can\u2019t sing their praises enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mary\u2019s advice to patients going through outpatient rehabilitation: show up to your appointments, work hard and do your exercises at home and the staff will take care of the rest.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What seemed like a routine morning for Mary Wendle \u2013 watering her flowers before she was off to work \u2013 did not go as planned when she tripped over her hose in the garden.
