One is on the day he was born. The other is on the day he was first diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. \u201cIt was that fundamental of a life change,\u201d said the Rockford, Illinois, resident.<\/p>\n<p>On January 2, 2011, Bob attended church with his daughter. \u201cDuring Mass I started feeling progressively worse,\u201d he said. \u201cI was weak and dizzy. Every time I tried to stand up I felt wobbly.\u201d Finally, he told his daughter that he needed help.<\/p>\n<p>She drove him to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/practices\/search\/?adv-practice_type=3\">OSF PromptCare<\/a>. There, a blood test revealed that his blood glucose level was dangerously high. A normal blood glucose level is less than 100 mg\/dl. Bob&#8217;s was above 500 mg\/dl.<\/p>\n<p>The doctor at OSF PromptCare told Bob that he had type 2 diabetes and needed to be admitted to the hospital. His daughter drove him to the emergency room at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/saint-anthony\/\">OSF HealthCare Saint Anthony Medical Center<\/a>. A care team was already waiting for him. He was admitted to the hospital and stayed for two days while he received medication to help bring his blood sugar level within a healthier range.<\/p>\n<h2>A renewed commitment to wellness<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3058\" src=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/zdeb_web-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/zdeb_web-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/zdeb_web-334x500.jpg 334w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/zdeb_web-474x710.jpg 474w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/zdeb_web-400x600.jpg 400w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/zdeb_web.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>After he was discharged from the hospital, Bob made sure to followup with his primary care physician, Michael Kouimelis, MD, of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/locations\/?latitude=42.2677214&#038;location=Rockford,%20IL%2061104&#038;longitude=-89.08777479999999&#038;locationType=Primary%20Care\">OSF HealthCare Medical Group \u2013 Rock Cut Primary Care<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cType 2 diabetes is a huge part of our practice,\u201d Dr. Kouimelis said. \u201cWe\u2019re very well trained in taking care of patients with diabetes and helping manage their condition with medication and lifestyle changes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patients also meet one-on-one with diabetes educators who help them implement new habits, troubleshoot challenges and achieve healthier blood sugar levels.<\/p>\n<p>When it came to making lifestyle changes, Bob didn\u2019t miss a beat. \u201cThe biggest one I made is my attitude toward the disease,\u201d he said. \u201cSome people may push it off or try to pretend that it isn\u2019t happening. I embrace being a diabetic. I read everything I could about diabetes so that I could better understand it. I realized that I could control the disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prior to his diagnosis, Bob already led a very active lifestyle. He frequently rides his road bike, cycling up to 4,000 miles each year. He also regularly lifts weights at the gym.<\/p>\n<p>After his diagnosis, he maintained his commitment to fitness and started paying much more attention to the foods he ate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI count carbs. I understand the glycemic index and how quickly those carbs get into my bloodstream,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I check nutrition labels and pay attention to serving sizes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bob follows Dr. Kouimelis\u2019 treatment plan, checking his blood glucose levels throughout the day and taking insulin one to four times per day, oral diabetes medication, blood pressure medicine and baby aspirin.<\/p>\n<h2>Successfully managing the day-to-day of diabetes<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3059\" src=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/zdeb_with_bike_web-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/zdeb_with_bike_web-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/zdeb_with_bike_web-500x334.jpg 500w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/zdeb_with_bike_web-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/zdeb_with_bike_web.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\u201cWhen patients are as engaged in their own care as Bob is, it makes a huge difference,\u201d Dr. Kouimelis said. \u201cI can prescribe medicine and discuss different options for treatment, but managing diabetes is a whole new lifestyle. I can\u2019t be there to tell patients what to do every single day so it makes a world of difference when they take ownership of their disease and make the necessary changes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today, seven years since his diagnosis, Bob is feeling well and works hard every day to control his blood glucose levels with diet, exercise and medication. He follows up with Dr. Kouimelis every few months. \u201cDiabetes is a damaging disease, but with <a href=\"http:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/Conditions\/Diabetes\/\">knowledge about the disease<\/a> and a healthy attitude, I won\u2019t let it damage me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bob Zdeb, 65, celebrates two birthdays each year.
