At 66, Mick VanEffen can\u2019t quite move like he used to, but he\u2019s not one to complain.<\/p>\n
After a pair of traumatic injuries in 2011 threw him for a loop, he faced an uphill battle to regain his quality of life. Thanks to his positive attitude, and constant support from OSF Rehabilitation, Mick is able to do the things he likes to do, like enjoy retirement.<\/p>\n
The first medical hurdle Mick, a retired millwright who lives in Gladstone, ran into was a steel one \u2013 a 500-pound chunk of steel, to be more precise, and actually it ran into him in a workplace accident. Among his injuries was a cracked sternum, a broken collarbone, two broken ribs and a punctured lung, and in August 2011, Mick had to have surgery to have a shoulder replaced.<\/p>\n
A few weeks after surgery, while driving to physical therapy in Gladstone, which he\u2019d started about a week earlier, Mick was driving about 50 miles per hour when his vehicle was hit head-on by another vehicle.<\/p>\n
Among the injuries he suffered, Mick\u2019s femur was broken in two places, which required the surgical insertion of a rod and some screws into his leg. The accidents took a painful toll.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would wake up with nerve pain,\u201d Mick said. \u201cI swore somebody had a cord hooked up in my leg and would turn up the electricity and send jolts of pain. I would fire up out of bed. It was just like \u2018WHAM,\u2019 it would fire and be gone.\u201d<\/p>\n

The accidents started Mick down a road that would require a few follow-up orthopedic surgeries over the years. The most recent surgery was an ankle fusion in May 2017 that required about six weeks of rehabilitation. After every surgery, Mick has gone back to OSF Rehabilitation for care.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s hard not to feel sorry for yourself, but you have to be optimistic,\u201d Mick said. \u201cI always felt comfortable going there. They were courteous people \u2013 nice and smiley. I felt supported \u2013 like I was on the right path. They were optimistic enough for me to make me feel that way, too.\u201d<\/p>\n
Damon Hastings, a physical therapist for OSF Rehabilitation, gives a lot of the credit for Mick\u2019s regained functionality to Mick himself. His injuries were so severe from his accidents that he required multiple follow-up surgeries, which meant new rounds of rehab. Throughout all of it, Mick never quit.<\/p>\n
\u201cMick has always had a good attitude despite what issues he was facing,\u201d Damon said. \u201cDue to the extent of his injuries, he had multiple follow-up surgeries over the years. After every new surgery he would come to us for rehab, and I was fortunate enough to be involved in one way or another. On his return, we\u2019d have a lot more to work on. Despite this, he kept the same positive attitude and was very diligent with his home program and his work at our facility. No matter what he was dealing with, or recovering from, he kept a positive attitude and gave 110 percent.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mick still deals with physical limitations, and he likely always will. But he\u2019s not the type of person to dwell on bumps in the road.<\/p>\n
He still hunts deer. He\u2019s a fair-weather fisherman. He spends time with his grandchildren. He welds in his workshop. He likes to do simple maintenance on his vehicles. Plus, he\u2019ll still take a crack at repairing just about anything that needs fixing around the house.<\/p>\n
\u201cI know I can\u2019t do what I used to do, but I\u2019m satisfied with where I\u2019m at and what I can do. I go as long as I can and sit down for a bit. Then, go some more.<\/p>\n
