{"id":4582,"date":"2018-10-17T08:00:07","date_gmt":"2018-10-17T13:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/blog\/?p=4582"},"modified":"2022-04-22T14:07:25","modified_gmt":"2022-04-22T19:07:25","slug":"fast-response-rescues-a-newborn-in-distress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/fast-response-rescues-a-newborn-in-distress\/","title":{"rendered":"Fast response by birthing center team rescues newborn in distress"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the birth of her second child, Katie Wills arrived at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/services\/pregnancy-birth\/locations\/bloomington\/\">Birthing Center at OSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Center<\/a> on her due date of January 5, 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Moments after her contractions began, her nurse, Mary Beth Ettien, RN-OB noticed that the baby\u2019s pulse rate had dropped precipitously. A blood vessel in the umbilical cord had ruptured and started to hemorrhage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuddenly, I was being rushed into the operating room for an emergency <a href=\"http:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/Search\/92,P07768\">cesarean section<\/a>,\u201d Katie recalled. \u201cRight before the anesthesia took effect, somebody tapped my foot and told me, \u2018We\u2019re with you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Natalie arrives<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4591 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/wills-family-2-resized-180x300.jpg\" alt=\"Katie Wills and her father in neonatal unit.\" width=\"180\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/wills-family-2-resized-180x300.jpg 180w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/wills-family-2-resized.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/>A team of doctors and nurses were also there for Katie\u2019s newborn daughter, Natalie, who\u00a0didn&#8217;t have a pulse. For 15 minutes, two neonatologists worked to revive her. Finally, they got a heartbeat.<\/p>\n<p>Further emergency treatment followed, which included cooling Natalie\u2019s entire body to prevent brain damage. Within hours, the still-fragile infant was transferred to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/childrens\/\">OSF HealthCare Children\u2019s Hospital of Illinois<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Katie woke up, she asked me if her baby was going to live,\u201d Mary Beth said. \u201cWe really didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Happy and healthy<\/h2>\n<p>The first positive sign occurred when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/providers\/search\/?specialty=74&amp;is_preferred=on&amp;add_midlevel=on&amp;near=&amp;max_distance=&amp;facility=&amp;gender=&amp;language=&amp;keywords=\">neonatologists<\/a> slowly began warming Natalie three days after her birth, while closely monitoring her and administering medications to prevent seizures.<\/p>\n<p>Hovering anxiously over their daughter\u2019s incubator, Katie and her husband, Kevin, suddenly saw Natalie raise her arm, almost like a wave.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeeing that first little movement was amazing,\u201d Katie said. After that, Natalie progressed steadily and responded well to physical therapy to condition her sucking reflexes and allow her to nurse normally.<\/p>\n<p>On January 22, she came home. Today she is a happy, healthy baby, showing no signs of her traumatic debut.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNatalie\u2019s story is truly a miracle\u2014not just that she lived, but how well she\u2019s doing now,\u201d said Renell Composto, DNP, RNC-OB manager of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/services\/pregnancy-birth\/locations\/bloomington\/\">OSF St. Joseph Birthing Center<\/a>. \u201cShe\u2019s a testament to the teamwork and experience of our medical team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone knew exactly what to do,\u201d said Mary Beth, who added that Natalie\u2019s birth was one of the most memorable she\u2019s seen in her 39 years of nursing. \u201cI\u2019ll never forget that little baby.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the birth of her second child, Katie Wills arrived at the Birthing Center at OSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Center on her due date of January 5, 2017.
