This leads to about 140,000 deaths. To put it plainly, strokes are very common.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, myths about strokes are prevalent. Unfortunately, misinformation and a misunderstanding of strokes can lead to devastating results for stroke sufferers.<\/p>\n<p>The most important thing to know about strokes is this: the only proper response to a stroke is to call 9-1-1 and get taken to the nearest stroke-certified hospital for treatment as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<h2>Debunking the myths<\/h2>\n<p>Monica Simionescu, MD, is a vascular neurologist with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/saint-anthony\/\">OSF HealthCare Saint Anthony Medical Center<\/a>, which handles more stroke cases than any other hospital in the Rockford, Illinois region. She understands that time is critical for treating strokes. She also knows that false beliefs can keep people from getting the treatment they need.<\/p>\n<h2>Myth #1: Strokes only happen to the elderly.<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Fact:<\/strong>\u201cThe fact is that elderly patients are more prone to strokes, but about 25 percent of strokes happen to people younger than 65,\u201d Dr. Simionescu said. \u201cMost are likely related to heart disease or blood clot disorders.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Myth #2: Strokes are painful.<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Fact:<\/strong> \u201cActually pain is not a common symptom of stroke,\u201d Dr. Simionescu said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/MultimediaRoom\/VideoLibrary\/?e=0#player:138,w1738\">Hemorrhagic strokes<\/a>, when a vessels in the brain bursts, can be associated with headaches, she added, but most strokes \u2013 caused by a blood clot in the brain \u2013 do not cause pain.<\/p>\n<h2>Myth #3: Strokes are hard to identify.<\/h2>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4606 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/stroke-myths2-300x188.jpg\" alt=\"nurses task station in a busy hospital wing\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/stroke-myths2-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/stroke-myths2-768x480.jpg 768w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/stroke-myths2-710x444.jpg 710w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/stroke-myths2-500x313.jpg 500w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/stroke-myths2-400x250.jpg 400w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/stroke-myths2.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fact:<\/strong> Stroke experts try to educate the public on a simple acronym to remember the symptoms of a stroke.<\/p>\n<p>That acronym is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/services\/neurosciences\/medical-services\/stroke\/\">BE FAST.<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>B:<\/strong> Balance. Sudden loss of balance or coordination.<\/li>\n<li><strong>E:<\/strong> Eyes. Blurred or lost vision in one or both eyes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>F:<\/strong> Facial drooping.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A:<\/strong> Arm weakness. Can you lift your arms above your head and hold them there?<\/li>\n<li><strong>S:<\/strong> Speech impairment. Slurring speech or difficulty speaking is a major sign.<\/li>\n<li><strong>T:<\/strong> Time to call 9-1-1. Do it immediately.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Myth #4: Strokes aren\u2019t hereditary.<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Fact:<\/strong> \u201cThe conditions that increase your risk of stroke, like heart disease, blood clot disorders or vascular problems can be inherited,\u201d Dr. Simionescu said.<\/p>\n<h2>Myth#5: Small strokes don\u2019t need to be treated.<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Fact:<\/strong> \u201cSmall strokes, if located in the right spots, can cause major deficits in your brain\u2019s abilities,\u201d Dr. Simionescu said. \u201cAnd after any stroke, you\u2019re at higher risk for a repeat stroke. Big or small, all strokes need to be treated the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Myth #6: You can treat a stroke by taking aspirin.<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Fact:<\/strong> At best, taking aspirin will do nothing to cure an <a href=\"http:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/MultimediaRoom\/VideoLibrary\/?e=0#player:138,k1905\">ischemic stroke<\/a>. At worst, it will make things worse during a hemorrhagic stroke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting to the hospital is the thing to do,\u201d Dr. Simionescu said.<\/p>\n<h2>Myth #7: If the symptoms go away, you don\u2019t need to see a doctor.<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Fact:<\/strong> \u201cThis is completely wrong,\u201d according to Dr. Simionescu. \u201cIf the symptoms go away, it may be a small stroke, which exposes you to a greater risk of having a bigger one. You are at high risk for a major stroke, so you need to get to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/services\/specialties\/emergency\">emergency room<\/a> or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/providers\/search\/\">doctor<\/a> as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Myth #8: Strokes are not preventable.<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Fact:<\/strong> \u201cActually, 80-90 percent of strokes can be prevented by controlling risk factors like <a href=\"http:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/Search\/56,DM203\">blood pressure<\/a>, and making lifestyle modifications,\u201d Dr. Simionescu said.<\/p>\n<p>You can learn more of the risk factors for stroke at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/services\/neurosciences\/medical-services\/stroke\/prevention\/\">ini.org<\/a>. Which ones apply to you and how can you control or minimize them?<\/p>\n<h2>Myth #9: There is no life after a stroke.<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Fact:<\/strong> \u201cThis is not true,\u201d Dr. Simionescu said. \u201cWe have more and more ways to treat strokes, and if we intervene in time we can actually save major deficits.
