But staying hydrated is an important part of staying healthy, regardless of the season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really prevalent for people to think about hydration in the summer,\u201d said Kaela Ketcham, a clinical dietitian with OSF HealthCare.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the wintertime, we aren\u2019t sweating like we do in the summer. It\u2019s not hot, and we aren\u2019t doing as many outdoor activities. Those things make us thirsty, so we drink more. But as soon as colder weather hits, a lot of us stop thinking about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Follow these tips to make sure you\u2019re getting the recommended 64 ounces of water each day.<\/p>\n<h2>Drinks that dehydrate<\/h2>\n<p>When we\u2019re thirsty during winter, we\u2019re more likely to opt for a warm beverage, rather than water, but these drinks could be making us even more <a href=\"http:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/Search\/85,P00828\">dehydrated<\/a> by causing more frequent urination.<\/p>\n<div class=\"alignright cta\">\n<p>Jazz up your plain water<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.osfhealthcare.org\/recipes\/search\/?q=infused\">Get infused water recipes<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The beverages we are choosing to hydrate us matter. Beverages that contain little to no calories, such as Crystal Light, unsweetened iced tea and water, are where we want most of our hydration to come from.<\/p>\n<p>Beverages that contain more calories, such as fruit juice, sweet tea and soda, may temporarily quench our thirst, but we will also be getting added sugars. These beverages can then lead to added weight if consumed too often.<\/p>\n<p>If you enjoy warm beverages, choose sugar-free hot chocolate or tea bags to make hot tea instead of regular hot chocolate or chai tea mix. Set your bottles out on the counter where you\u2019ll see them or use rubber bands to count how many times you\u2019ve refilled throughout the day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of ways you can keep track of how much you\u2019re drinking. You have to find what works for you,\u201d Kaela said.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of us carry a water bottle in the summer time to stay hydrated but don\u2019t keep it up year round. Keep a water bottle on hand or in your purse to stay on track toward drinking enough fluids.<\/p>\n<h2>Signs of dehydration<\/h2>\n<p>Being thirsty or having dark colored urine are common signs of dehydration. Urine should be a pale yellow color, similar to lemonade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it\u2019s any darker, you\u2019ll want to start sipping some more water,\u201d Kaela said.<\/p>\n<p>If you become more dehydrated, you could start to feel dizzy, <a href=\"https:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/Search\/34,22213-1\">fatigued<\/a> or even confused. Older people and those who have certain medical conditions could be at even higher risk.<\/p>\n<p>In her work with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/saint-francis\/services\/weight-management\/non-surgical-weight-loss-options\/\">medical weight loss<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/saint-francis\/services\/weight-management\/surgical-weight-loss-options\/\">surgical weight loss programs<\/a>, Kaela emphasizes the importance of staying hydrated as part of a healthy diet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur body can \u2018trick us\u2019 into thinking we are hungry when we are actually just thirsty.
