One way that OSF HealthCare aims to achieve this is with the help of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/blog\/advanced-practice-providers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">advanced practice providers (APPs).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>APPs include advanced practice nurses (APRNs) and physician assistants (PA). \u201cThese providers have advanced training and education in providing medical care for patients,\u201d said Melinda Cooling, APRN, Vice President of Advance Practice at OSF HealthCare \u201cThey have the ability to do physical exams, determine diagnoses, prescribe treatment, order testing and more.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Working Together<\/h2>\n<p>Today, health care is moving toward a team approach. This means that each team member brings a different set of skills and works together, with the patient, to deliver comprehensive care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf a patient arrives in the Emergency Department, the first person they\u2019re likely to see is an APP,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/providers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Samantha Smith, PA,<\/a> a hospitalist at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/saint-francis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.<\/a> \u201cWe\u2019re able to start putting the pieces together to formulate a diagnosis and treatment plan often before they\u2019re even admitted to the hospital or see a physician.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At OSF HealthCare, APPs are in nearly every service line including acute care, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/services\/home-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">home care<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/services\/skilled-nursing-network\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">skilled nursing<\/a>, subspecialties and more. \u201cAPPs can reduce access time for patients,\u201d Cooling said. \u201cIf a patient is newly diagnosed with <a href=\"http:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/Search\/85,P00351\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">diabetes<\/a>, for instance, they\u2019re often able to be seen much sooner by an APP.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In rural settings, APPs are increasingly providing the majority of care. This means that patients have access to medical care they need that may not have been available there before.<\/p>\n<h2>Keeping Pace with Change<\/h2>\n<p>Both health care and the population are rapidly changing. The population is growing and aging while health care is shifting its focus from not only treating patients who are sick, but also helping to prevent disease and keep people well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we strive to meet the growing needs of our population and take better care of our patients, more providers are needed,\u201d Cooling said. \u201cThanks to their training and skillset, APPs are often the ones filling those roles.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OSF HealthCare is dedicated to ensuring that patients have access to care where and when they need it.
