According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>, there are about 14.5 million cancer survivors in the U.S., with that number expected to grow to 20 million by 2020.<\/p>\n<h2>Addressing a growing problem<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Problem<\/strong>: Some cancer treatments may cause lasting heart damage \u2013 especially for patients with pre-existing heart conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see a large number of patients with cancer, many of whom have established heart disease, are at risk for heart disease or will be exposed to treatments that may cause heart damage,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/providers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Barry Clemson<\/a>, heart failure medical director, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/services\/specialties\/heart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OSF HealthCare Cardiovascular Institute.<\/a> \u201cThese patients require careful evaluation and surveillance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Solution<\/strong>: OSF Cardiovascular Institute established the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/services\/specialties\/heart\/programs-services\/cardio-oncology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cardio-Oncology Program<\/a> \u2013 one of only a handful of such programs in the country. The program helps prevent, monitor and treat cardiovascular disease in cancer patients during and after treatment to ensure long-term health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDepending on the type of cancer therapy a patient is undergoing, they can experience multiple heart complications such as <a href=\"http:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/Search\/85,P00195\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">arrhythmias<\/a>, valvular heart disease or <a href=\"http:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/Search\/138,W1708\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">heart failure<\/a>,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/providers.osfhealthcare.org\/provider\/Kavitha+Kalvakuri\/1462018?unified=Kavitha&amp;sort=networks%2C%20relevance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Kavitha Kalvakuri<\/a>, cardiologist, OSF Cardiovascular Institute. \u201cSome of these effects may not appear until 15 to 20 years after cancer treatment has stopped.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Cardio-Oncology: A multidisciplinary team approach<\/h2>\n<p>The Cardio-Oncology Program unites experts in radiology, oncology and cardiology to provide optimal heart care.<\/p>\n<p>Services include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Risk assessment prior to cancer treatment<\/li>\n<li>Care for patients with cancer who have existing heart disease<\/li>\n<li>Monitoring for cardiac complications during cancer therapy<\/li>\n<li>Care for patients who have cardiac side effects from traditional cancer therapies<\/li>\n<li>Assessment of cardiac risks related to new or changing cancer therapies<\/li>\n<li>Assessment of long-term cardiac risk in cancer survivors<\/li>\n<li>Evaluation of cardiac tumors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThe goal of the Cardio-Oncology Program is to prevent interruption or discontinued cancer treatment due to cardiac complications from cancer treatment,\u201d said Dr. Clemson.<\/p>\n<p>After referral, the patient meets with a cardiologist for an evaluation, which may include imaging to further define the patient\u2019s cardiovascular condition. The team then develops a treatment plan that varies according to the type of heart condition, underlying conditions and if the patient is currently being treated for cancer.<\/p>\n<p>If you are
