He had trouble swallowing and speaking loud enough for his family to hear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShaking is just part of it,\u201d the 82-year-old said. \u201cIt was a completely different lifestyle than I\u2019d lived before. It seemed like things that had come natural became manual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/services\/neurosciences\/medical-services\/movement-disorders\/\">His doctor<\/a> recommended medication, physical therapy and speech therapy. After several months, Wendell started to realize that he was regaining some of the skills he thought he\u2019d lost because of <a href=\"http:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/YourFamily\/OlderAdults\/Concerns\/AlzheimerParkinson\/Parkinsons\/85,P00800\">Parkinson\u2019s<\/a>, a neurological disease that effects movement.<\/p>\n<h2>Making a believer<\/h2>\n<p>When Wendell\u2019s doctor recommended LOUD Crowd, a weekly group class that involves shouting and voice exercises, Wendell wasn\u2019t sure how that would affect his struggles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought that\u2019s so silly. What\u2019s that going to do?\u201d he said. \u201cI didn\u2019t realize the importance of it. I didn\u2019t realize how it would help me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Twice each day, Wendell sits at the kitchen table and flips through a booklet of vocal exercises. He shouts \u201cMay, Me, My, Moe, Moo\u201d five times and yells \u201cAh\u201d for 10 seconds, just as he\u2019s practiced in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/services\/rehabilitation\/services\/neurological-therapy\/\">LOUD Crowd classes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t think of it, but making a racket for 10 seconds isn\u2019t easy,\u201d Wendell said.<\/p>\n<p>The class combines cognitive and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/services\/rehabilitation\/services\/speech-language-therapy\/\">speech therapy<\/a> to combat the degenerative effects of Parkinson\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Since beginning treatment, Wendell\u2019s doctors say his swallowing has improved by 80 percent, while his family says they notice a big difference in the volume and clarity in his voice. He was even able to start driving again and passed his renewal exam without any problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made a believer out of myself,\u201d Wendell said.<\/p>\n<h2>See your progress<\/h2>\n<p>For Wendell, regaining the ability to care for himself and remain independent was an unexpected, but an invaluable gift after beginning therapy. Along with the regular evaluations his medical team conducts, Wendell has his own way of tracking his progress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurvey your condition now and check each month.
