She\u2019s missing the left side of her pelvis, her left leg and some of her gastrointestinal system didn\u2019t connect properly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething happened to her from conception \u2013 something didn\u2019t develop right,\u201d Kassi said.<\/p>\n<h2>Hearing the news<\/h2>\n<p>Kassi was 20 weeks pregnant when a <a href=\"http:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/MultimediaRoom\/VideoLibrary\/?e=0#player:138,w1777\">sonogram<\/a> showed the baby\u2019s left leg was missing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was really shocking,\u201d Brian said.<\/p>\n<p>Kassi added, \u201cWe cried for about three days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Eureka, Illinois, couple said the remainder of the pregnancy involved doctor visits every couple of weeks, including with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/hospitals\/childrens\/programs-services\/maternal-fetal\">Maternal-Fetal Medicine<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/saint-francis\/\">OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center<\/a> in Peoria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey really couldn\u2019t tell us much else \u2013 only that her leg was missing,\u201d Kassi said. \u201cBut it seemed like every time we saw the doctor there was something else. Her heart was fine, but they couldn\u2019t find her right kidney and when she was born, they thought it still was missing. It wasn\u2019t until she was 3 or 4 months old they determined the right kidney had fused with the left into one large kidney.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>A Christmas gift<\/h2>\n<p>On December 22, 2016, Kassi had a cesarean section at 37 weeks due to her blood pressure and Adalie being breech.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was tiny \u2013 4 pounds, 1 ounce,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Adalie went to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/childrens\/services\/neonatology\/\">neonatal intensive care unit<\/a> (NICU) at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/childrens\/\">OSF HealthCare Children\u2019s Hospital of Illinois<\/a> in Peoria for eight days.<\/p>\n<p>Since Adalie\u2019s bowels didn\u2019t develop properly she underwent <a href=\"http:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/Search\/92,p07727\">colostomy<\/a> surgery on Christmas Eve when she was 2 days old.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe went home on New Year\u2019s Eve \u2013 we were a little surprised. She was so small,\u201d Kassi said. \u00a0\u201cBut it turned out she was such an easy baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Meet Lefty Lucy<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_5611\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5611\" class=\"wp-image-5611 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/choi-adalie2-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/choi-adalie2-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/choi-adalie2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/choi-adalie2-200x200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/choi-adalie2-400x400.jpg 400w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/choi-adalie2.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5611\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adalie Guth uses a walker to help with her balance, and remains independent thanks to therapy and family support.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Fast forward two years.<\/p>\n<p>Adalie scampers up the stairs to the second floor of the family\u2019s farmhouse built by Brian\u2019s great-grandparents.<\/p>\n<p>When Adalie tackled the stairs at home, Kassi said \u201cit was kind of at that moment, that I was like, \u2018OK, she\u2019s going to be just fine.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the past year, Adalie has welcomed a new friend, Lefty Lucy \u2013 a prosthetic leg she was fitted with at Shriner\u2019s Hospital for Children.<\/p>\n<p>At her age and size, the prosthetic doesn\u2019t yet have a knee joint, so she\u2019s had to learn through therapy how to stand up, sit down and walk when she has it on. She uses a walker to help with her balance.<\/p>\n<p>Her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/childrens\/services\/rehabilitation\/\">pediatric physical therapist<\/a>, Monica Blunier with OSF Children\u2019s Hospital, has been working with Adalie since she was 3 months old. Since February 2018, weekly therapy sessions focus on improving Adalie\u2019s strength and balance when she\u2019s wearing the prosthetic leg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s learning to walk independently. She can walk across the room without her walker. She\u2019s close to standing up. We\u2019re helping her be as independent as she can,\u201d Monica said.<\/p>\n<p>It was Monica\u2019s idea to name the prosthetic leg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith little kids, they don\u2019t understand left and right so when you want them to focus on the prosthetic, you can refer to it by a name. It\u2019s easier for them to figure out what you\u2019re talking about,\u201d she said. \u201cShe\u2019ll tell people, \u2018this is Lucy (pointing to her left leg) and this is my real leg (pointing to her right leg).\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>A future without\u00a0 limits<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_5543\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5543\" class=\"wp-image-5543 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Adalie-Tractor-FT3-280x300.jpg\" alt=\"Adalie Guth sitting on a tractor\" width=\"280\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Adalie-Tractor-FT3-280x300.jpg 280w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Adalie-Tractor-FT3.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5543\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A cheerful Adalie Guth sits on a tractor on her family farm.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There\u2019s very little, Monica said, that Adalie won\u2019t be able to accomplish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019ll be able to do whatever she wants to do. She\u2019s spunky. She\u2019ll figure it out,\u201d she said. \u201cShe has an amazing spirit. She just makes you smile. Everyone sees her and they just light up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kassi agrees, knowing her daughter has a future without limits.<\/p>\n<p>On the medical side, there will be a surgery to reverse the colostomy, continued monitoring of her kidney situation and there will be new prosthetic legs as she grows.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing has stopped her,\u201d Kassi said. \u201cAll the fears and things we thought could happen \u2013 didn\u2019t happen.
