Both seasonal allergies and a cold can cause a runny nose and sneezing. So how can you tell what\u2019s causing your child\u2019s symptoms?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA cold and a reaction to seasonal allergies can sometimes look similar,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/providers.osfhealthcare.org\/provider\/Jaya+Wadhawan\/1976036?name=Jaya%2520Wadhawan&amp;sort=networks%252C%2520relevance&amp;from=search-list\">Jaya Wadhawan, MD<\/a>, a pediatrician for OSF HealthCare. \u201cBut there are some symptoms that can make it easier to spot the difference, if you know what you\u2019re looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Cold symptoms<\/h2>\n<p>Common colds are caused by a virus and typically last 5-7 days.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fever<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re wondering, \u201ccan allergies cause a fever,\u201d the answer is no. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/blog\/whats-considered-a-fever-and-when-to-see-a-doctor\/\">fever<\/a> with a cold, however, can be very common.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sore throat<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A cold with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/blog\/is-my-sore-throat-covid-19-or-not\/\">sore throat<\/a> is more common than a sore throat caused by allergies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Body aches<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Viral colds can typically have you feeling achy and fatigued, which can be treated with plenty of rest, hydration and pain relievers.<\/p>\n<h1>Allergy symptoms<\/h1>\n<p>Seasonal allergies are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/blog\/get-to-know-the-immune-system-your-bodys-defense-against-illness\/\">immune system<\/a> responses to allergens, such as seasonal tree or grass pollens.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If your child has itching of the eyes, nose or skin, it\u2019s most likely allergies. A cold does not cause itching.<\/li>\n<li>Allergies usually cause symptoms that last longer than two weeks.<\/li>\n<li>Allergy symptoms come in a predictable pattern. For example, if symptoms show up every spring or every summer, this typically indicates your child has allergies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you suspect your child has allergies, knowing what some of the common allergens are can help you identify what might be causing your child\u2019s symptoms.<\/p>\n<div class=\"alignright cta\">\n<p>Is it a cold or allergies?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/oncall\/urgent-care\/\">Help your child find relief with OSF OnCall<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Indoor allergens\u00a0<\/strong>include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Foods<\/li>\n<li>Dust and mold<\/li>\n<li>Animals, such as cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, gerbils, guinea pigs and others<\/li>\n<li>Clothing and toys, particularly ones made or trimmed with animal hair<\/li>\n<li>Latex or bacterial enzymes in items such as rubber gloves and balloons, elastics in clothes and cleaning products<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Outdoor allergens<\/strong>\u00a0include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pollen, particularly from March until mid-June, when pollen counts are high<\/li>\n<li>Grass, which causes summer allergies from June until about August 15<\/li>\n<li>Ragweed in the fall, which usually extends from mid-August until the first frost<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The best ways to relieve your child\u2019s allergy symptoms are to control your child\u2019s exposure to allergens and to use over-the-counter medications per your doctor\u2019s instructions.<\/p>\n<h2>\u00a0Tips for allergy relief<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Controlling exposure to allergens<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Dust mites:<\/strong>\u00a0Use pillow and mattress covers, stay away from down blankets or feather pillows, do not allow stuffed animals in the bed with your child and wash stuffed animals and linens regularly.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Outdoor allergens:<\/strong>\u00a0Use air conditioning as much as possible, bathe and change your children\u2019s clothes after they play outside and keep windows closed at night.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mold:<\/strong>\u00a0Avoid playing near moist piles of leaves and have moisture-rich areas of your home checked regularly for mold.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Medications<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Oral medications:<\/strong>\u00a0Many long-acting, non-drowsy medications that are available are safe for children ages 2 and older. Talk to your child\u2019s doctor to see which one is right for your child.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nasal spray:<\/strong>\u00a0Nasal saline spray is simply water with salt, which is a natural way to help loosen mucus and congestion from the nose. It also aids in helping kids blow their noses. Children can use it as many times a day as needed and then practice blowing their noses.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you\u2019re not sure if your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/blog\/how-to-safely-treat-your-childs-allergies\/\">child\u2019s symptoms<\/a> are caused by a cold or by allergies, it\u2019s best to speak to your doctor. There are different forms of allergy tests available, such as a blood test or skin-prick test.
