He loves fishing, camping, swimming and adventuring in the woods.<\/p>\n<p>The 14-year-old Mattoon, Illinois, boy is described by his parents as funny, caring, curious and kind. But even on good days, Kaleb struggles with anxiety and sensory sensitivities. He was transferred to a larger medical center in a nearby city where it was determined Kaleb was <a href=\"https:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/Search\/85,P00802\">septic<\/a> with an <a href=\"http:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/Search\/90,P02019\">E.coli<\/a> infection throughout his body. During emergency surgery to clean out the infection, doctors found a hole in Kaleb\u2019s intestine.<\/p>\n<p>A second surgery a week later was needed to clean out any remaining infection. During two weeks in the intensive care unit, Kaleb ran a very high fever and had a high heart rate due to the infection.<\/p>\n<p>Unable to walk, fluid built up in Kaleb\u2019s body. Due to a build-up of about 17 pounds of fluid, Kaleb required high-flow oxygen to help his lungs work. Throughout this time, the teen was in constant, intense pain and fighting fevers.<\/p>\n<p>During the two-week hospital stay, Kaleb had two blood transfusions, strong antibiotics and received nutrition through a peripherally introduced central catheter (PICC line).<\/p>\n<h2>Connecting with OSF HealthCare<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_6479\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6479\" class=\"wp-image-6479 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/eastern-kaleb-reedy-sd1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Kaleb Reedy with service dog, Dory\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/eastern-kaleb-reedy-sd1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/eastern-kaleb-reedy-sd1-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/eastern-kaleb-reedy-sd1-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/eastern-kaleb-reedy-sd1.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-6479\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kaleb with service dog, Dory<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After two weeks with little improvement, it was decided Kaleb needed surgery and care at a hospital specializing in caring for kids. He was transferred to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/childrens\/\">OSF HealthCare Children\u2019s Hospital of Illinois<\/a> in Peoria. Another surgery, more antibiotics and additional blood transfusions ensued.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/providers\/paul-jeziorczak-1462931\">Dr. Paul \u201cDr. Paul\u201d Jeziorczak<\/a>, a pediatric surgeon with OSF Children\u2019s Hospital, provided the family a reassuring presence during Kaleb\u2019s two-week hospital stay in Peoria. Kaleb eventually began seeing Dr. Jeziorczak at the OSF Children\u2019s Hospital <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/locations\/osf-childrens-hospital-of-illinois-congenital-heart-center-urbana-169297\">specialty clinic in Urbana<\/a> \u2013 close to the family\u2019s home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we got to know Dr. Paul and the rest of the team, Kaleb just became more comfortable,\u201d his mom, Lyndsey, said. \u201cKaleb felt like Dr. Paul was trying to understand him and was on his side. He responded best to Dr. Paul.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of Kaleb being in crisis mode most of the time. Dr. Paul\u2019s no-panic presence was very helpful,\u201d Lyndsey said. \u201cAnd as more time went by they each got to know each other better.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Back at home<\/h2>\n<p>When Kaleb was able to go home, Lyndsey said it still wasn\u2019t easy.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6537\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6537\" class=\"wp-image-6537 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Kaleb_family-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Kaleb with his family\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Kaleb_family-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Kaleb_family-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Kaleb_family-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Kaleb_family.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-6537\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kaleb with his family<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cHe couldn\u2019t eat or drink anything and continued to receive nourishment only through the PICC line,\u201d she said. \u201cA nurse and physical therapist visited once a week to treat and monitor Kaleb\u2019s progress, but the majority of his care was provided by my husband, Brian, and myself. This included changing bandages and drains, administering medication and keeping him clean to prevent infection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The weeks at home out of the hospital were very difficult for Kaleb and his family as it was around the holidays. Kaleb spent Thanksgiving in the hospital and was released just days before Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had trouble with sleeping, <a href=\"https:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/Search\/90,P02555\">severe anxiety<\/a>, flashbacks and was in constant pain. Bathing and dressing changes caused him to have <a href=\"https:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/Search\/90,P01639\">panic attacks<\/a>. He developed a urinary tract infection, and endured recurring fevers and vomiting, which resulted in several trips to the ER and another blood transfusion,\u201d Lyndsey said. \u201cIn January, he was taken back to OSF Children\u2019s Hospital with a gall bladder attack. Kaleb was in severe pain. Due to the nature of his illness, he couldn\u2019t be treated with strong pain relievers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While at home, Kaleb had wonderful visitors and his sister, Kaylee, and his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/saint-francis\/giving-volunteering\/animal-assisted-therapy\/\">service dog<\/a>, Dory, were by his side. His parents worked tirelessly through their own exhaustion and anxiety to care for and help him. Despite everyone\u2019s best hopes and efforts, Kaleb\u2019s intestine did not heal and further intervention was needed.<\/p>\n<h2>Back to the hospital<\/h2>\n<p>Kaleb returned to OSF Children\u2019s\u2019 Hospital in mid-January 2018, undergoing <a href=\"http:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/Search\/134,114\">ileostomy<\/a> surgery to remove a section of intestine, colon and valve and to fix several hernias. While the operation was successful, the pain Kaleb experienced was intense and he had side effects from the pain medication.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe really struggled to recover from that surgery,\u201d Lyndsey said. \u201cHis sensitive sensory systems were being constantly assaulted and he was in severe pain. He battled fevers, fluid in the lungs and anxiety as he worked to return home.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>On the mend<\/h2>\n<p>In August 2018, Kaleb underwent another surgery with Dr. Jeziorczak to reverse the ileostomy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was his last surgery and so far, things are going good,\u201d Lyndsey said. \u201cKaleb has overcome a lot, and he\u2019s back to enjoying his physical activities and his passions. It\u2019s been difficult for him to overcome the additional anxiety his illness caused. He is the strongest teen I know, mentally and physically.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Thankful for the care at OSF Children\u2019s Hospital<\/h2>\n<p>But the care Kaleb and his entire family were shown by Dr. Jeziorczak and everyone at OSF Children\u2019s Hospital \u201chelped us through all of this,\u201d Lyndsey said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6480\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6480\" class=\"wp-image-6480 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/eastern-kaleb-reedy-sd2-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Kaleb Reedy with Dr. Paul Jeziorczak\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/eastern-kaleb-reedy-sd2-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/eastern-kaleb-reedy-sd2-333x500.jpg 333w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/eastern-kaleb-reedy-sd2.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-6480\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kaleb Reedy with Dr. Paul Jeziorczak<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cKaleb&#8217;s very serious needs and condition required a team \u2013 infectious disease, surgery and the pharmacy, which mixed his nutrition,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lyndsey said. \u201cAs parents, we remained in shock most of the time. At OSF Children\u2019s Hospital, Kaleb could have therapy dogs visit \u2013 he missed his dog so much \u2013 and we could wash his favorite blanket from home onsite, which was a great comfort for him. They encouraged family to be with Kaleb, and he was so thankful to be able to go out on the rooftop garden to get fresh air and sun.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey really allowed him the freedom to be a kid. One night we had bought him glow sticks and a glow in the dark ball and we had a little party. He loves the snow and we brought a little inside for him to throw a snowball at his dad. We always tried to do things that would cheer him up and the staff was always for this,\u201d Lyndsey recalls. \u201cOne nurse remembered he liked our Christmas tree at home and was sad he was stuck in the hospital. She came into work a few days later with a tree and ornaments that were just for him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are so thankful for the care he received from Dr. Paul (Jeziorczak) and the entire team,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kaleb Reedy is always on the move.
