Just recently, my family found out our good neighbors are moving to another city.<\/p>\n<p>We have become great friends over the years. Our children, who are all around the same age, spend every waking moment together. After seven years of living next to each other, how was this something I could help myself and family to accept?<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, enduring a transition is something I\u2019m quite familiar with. In the health care industry, we have to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/blog\/embracing-change-in-health-care\/\">handle a lot of change <\/a>with everything from learning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/blog\/leading-dual-transformation-in-health-care\/\">new ways to care for our patients<\/a> to adopting new processes that will make our work <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/blog\/four-the-future-michael-allen\/\">more efficient<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here are three steps that I\u2019ve used to adopt change not only in my work place, but in my personal life as well.<\/p>\n<h2>Take the time to understand<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6948 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/innovation-change-sd1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Office leader embracing change and looking out office window\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/innovation-change-sd1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/innovation-change-sd1-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/innovation-change-sd1-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/innovation-change-sd1.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Whether it\u2019s a major transition coming at work or finding out that something in my personal life is about to change, it\u2019s important to mentally process and absorb what I\u2019ve been told, understand the impact it will have and figure out what I need to do to prepare.<\/p>\n<p>If I\u2019ve taken a moment to let a future adjustment sink in, I can then ask more thoughtful questions towards understanding the impetus for a particular transformation. If I can better comprehend the burning platform, I can accept it, celebrate it and eventually help champion this change.<\/p>\n<h2>Prepare for the change<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6957 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/innovation-change-sd4-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Female and male colleague preparing for change\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/innovation-change-sd4-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/innovation-change-sd4-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/innovation-change-sd4-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/innovation-change-sd4.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Outside of asking questions to understand what\u2019s coming, it\u2019s also important for me to do research, especially if the approaching change is something I\u2019ve never dealt with before. Finding out all of the information I can brings a certain level of comfort which helps me stay positive throughout the process.<\/p>\n<p>Understanding that change doesn\u2019t come easily for everyone, I recommend continuing to ask questions along the way. Don\u2019t be scared to have an honest conversation with your leader if you are having a tough time processing or actually making a transition. Chances are they can help alleviate any concerns you may have.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also the opportunity to lean on your peers who are likely going through similar changes and have the same apprehensions. Instead of focusing on all of the ways a change will disrupt your everyday activity, think of the opportunities it can present\u2014not just for you, but for the organization as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe there\u2019s a chance that you will take on a new role. Perhaps, you will get to interact with new people and work on different types of projects you\u2019ve never done before.<\/p>\n<p>If nothing else, it\u2019s important to note that at some point\u2026.this too will become the norm and you\u2019ll wonder why you weren\u2019t doing things this way in the past!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There\u2019s the old adage that the only thing that\u2019s constant is change.
