Let the parties begin, right?<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what a wave of breathless internet headlines would have you believe, anyway, but let\u2019s pump the brakes for a moment. In reality, health care experts don\u2019t want anyone to start drinking for the sake of the health benefits. There are alternatives for achieving those health benefits that carry less risk for negative side effects.<\/p>\n<h2>What\u2019s all the hype about?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"alignright cta\">\n<p>How&#8217;s your heart?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/profilers.evaliahealth.com\/v3\/be108630-1023-4f43-a7e6-a4b709b7e5cc\/\">Take a free heart health assessment <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>It is true that studies have found alcohol can help raise your \u201cgood cholesterol,\u201d known as <a href=\"http:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/Search\/167,hdl_cholesterol\">HDL<\/a>. Plus, red wine is fairly rich in flavonoids, which are nutrients that can positively impact skin protection, brain function, blood sugar and blood pressure regulation, as well as other <a href=\"http:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/Search\/19,Antioxidants\">antioxidants<\/a>, which protect the cells in your body from damage.<\/p>\n<p>Mary Vojta, a clinical dietitian, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/providers\/timir-baman-1463513\">Timir Baman, MD<\/a>, a cardiology specialist with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/services\/specialties\/heart\/\">OSF HealthCare Cardiovascular Institute<\/a>, said those are true health benefits, but there are better ways to get those same benefits and avoid the negative impacts of drinking alcohol.<\/p>\n<p>Those headlines about drinking alcohol to improve your health may grab your attention, but they don\u2019t tell the whole story.<\/p>\n<h2>Moderation is key<\/h2>\n<p>Before you think you have a medically proven hall pass to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/blog\/know-drinking-problem\/\">drink to excess<\/a> at your weekend tailgate, there are some things you should know.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlcohol, in general, will raise your good cholesterol slightly, but it can also increase your <a href=\"http:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/Search\/138,K1905\">stroke<\/a> risk, raise your <a href=\"http:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/MultimediaRoom\/VideoLibrary\/?e=0#player:138,k1921\">blood pressure<\/a> and even <a href=\"http:\/\/healthlibrary.osfhealthcare.org\/Search\/85,P00656\">damage your liver<\/a>,\u201d Dr. Baman said.<\/p>\n<p>The studies about the health benefits of alcohol specifically refer to the benefits that can be had from drinking in <strong><em>MODERATION<\/em><\/strong>. What does that mean? Specifically, a moderate serving of alcohol is one drink a day for women and two drinks per day for men. And that serving size is 12 ounces for beer, four or five ounces of wine and 1.5 ounces of 80 proof liquor.<\/p>\n<p>So if you wish to enjoy alcohol at a happy hour or a tailgate party, those are the limits at which you may see those minor health benefits.<\/p>\n<h2>Weighing the benefits<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7333 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/heart-healthy-hh-sd2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"concord grapes on a table\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/heart-healthy-hh-sd2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/heart-healthy-hh-sd2-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/heart-healthy-hh-sd2-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/heart-healthy-hh-sd2.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>If you\u2019re someone just looking for some relatively simple ways to improve your health, though, you\u2019d do better to avoid alcohol all together.<\/p>\n<p>On average just 4-5 ounces of wine contains 80-100 calories and people tend to pour themselves more than that per glass, according to Vojta. A 12-ounce beer can contain more than 170 calories. Liquor comes in at 65-85 calories an ounce, depending on the proof, she added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you really want those calories just to raise the HDL?\u201d Vojta asked. \u201cExercise and weight loss will help raise the HDL and prevent those unwanted calories or pounds from the alcohol and help spare you from that &#8216;middle tire.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you want to get the benefit of the flavonoids and antioxidants found in red wine, but don\u2019t want the alcohol, drink grape juice, or eat red grapes, berries or a few peanuts instead. If you do choose to drink, make sure you speak with your doctor first to make sure you\u2019re healthy enough to handle alcohol, and that it won\u2019t cause any bad reactions with medications you&#8217;re taking.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Have you heard: Drinking alcohol in moderation is actually good for you!
