{"id":83,"date":"2013-08-08T03:30:31","date_gmt":"2013-08-08T08:30:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.osfsaintanthony.org\/blog\/?p=83"},"modified":"2022-01-13T20:48:09","modified_gmt":"2022-01-14T02:48:09","slug":"three-ways-dads-can-support-moms-who-breastfeed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/three-ways-dads-can-support-moms-who-breastfeed\/","title":{"rendered":"Three ways dads can support breastfeeding moms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-99\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" src=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/shutterstock_101902804-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Breastfeeding\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/>As this year\u2019s <a title=\"World Breastfeeding Week\" href=\"http:\/\/worldbreastfeedingweek.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Breastfeeding Week<\/a> comes to an end and we head into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usbreastfeeding.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Breastfeeding Awareness Month<\/a>, it\u2019s a great time to talk about how to support moms who will be breastfeeding.<\/p>\n<p>In order to establish a good milk supply, it is important that the baby nurse often at the breast during the first three weeks. Routine pumping can begin after three weeks, and this is when a baby should be introduced to a bottle. Waiting until the baby is three weeks old can also help prevent nipple confusion.<\/p>\n<p>Without the option to bottle-feed baby mom\u2019s breast milk, dad can feel left out of his child\u2019s care during those early days. So how can fathers be involved with breastfeeding?<\/p>\n<p><b>1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Attend a class on breastfeeding with your wife<\/b> close to the end of her pregnancy so you learn the same information she is, including why breastfeeding is so important, how to get breastfeeding off to a good start and methods to help through the rough spots.<\/p>\n<p><b>2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/b><b>Take advantage of opportunities to care for your baby other than feeding:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Burp your baby after or between feedings<\/li>\n<li>Change diapers (frequently!)<\/li>\n<li>Bring your baby to mom to nurse at night<\/li>\n<li>Walk, talk or read to your little one<\/li>\n<li>Hold your baby often<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/b><b>Look for any opportunity to help mom, such as:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Telling her what a good job she is doing<\/li>\n<li>Bringing her snacks and beverages<\/li>\n<li>Offering to walk, talk or read to the baby so she can shower, nap or eat<\/li>\n<li>Taking care of all of the housework so she has ample time to feed the baby and get some rest<\/li>\n<li>Attending her follow-up appointments so you can both learn how to troubleshoot common breastfeeding issues<\/li>\n<li>Encouraging her to call a lactation consultant if she has questions<\/li>\n<li>Reminding her that she is giving the baby the very best start by giving the gift only she can give \u2013 her breast milk<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But most of all, tell her that you love her and will be there to support and care for her and the baby.
