In fact, we often feel something is missing if we don\u2019t have it.<\/p>\n<p>If it&#8217;s not our phones, it&#8217;s a TV or a tablet or a laptop&#8230; In fact, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nielsen.com\/us\/en\/insights\/article\/2018\/time-flies-us-adults-now-spend-nearly-half-a-day-interacting-with-media\/\">Nielsen study<\/a> says adults in the U.S. consume more than 11 hours of media a day. And the younger generations are watching us as we&#8217;re glued to our screens.<\/p>\n<p>With ties to depression, obesity, troubled sleep and more, what&#8217;s the best way to make sure screen time&#8217;s not getting the best of any of us?<\/p>\n<h2>Make a plan<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aap.org\/en-us\/Pages\/Default.aspx\">American Academy of Pediatrics<\/a> recommends creating a family media use plan. Together, draft a document that lays down basic rules. Dr. Nauman says the brain\u2019s neural networks are developing most rapidly in the first five years and under age two, language and emergent literacy skills are better learned through personal contact.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Their minds should be nourished with books, singing, playing, you know, getting them to move, making a playroom for them \u2026 really just engaging with them on a more personal, social level,\u201d she advised.<\/p>\n<h3>Toddlers<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8852 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/digital-detox-sd1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Father on son playing on tablets\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/digital-detox-sd1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/digital-detox-sd1-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/digital-detox-sd1-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/osf-blog.live.imagescape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/digital-detox-sd1.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>By the time a baby turns two they can learn words from a person on a live video chat and some interactive touch screens, but Dr. Nauman says studies show they can learn that way\u00a0only\u00a0when parents watch with them and re-teach the content.<\/p>\n<p>By age 3-5, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aap.org\/en-us\/Pages\/Default.aspx\">American Academy of Pediatrics <\/a>says that no more than an hour of screen time is a good guideline.<\/p>\n<h3>School-age kids and teens<\/h3>\n<p>Pediatricians, including Dr. Nauman, say it\u2019s important for parents of school age children to watch TV with them and monitor any computer or screen use. It\u2019s important to balance screen time with other healthy behaviors. Dr. Nauman encourages teens to be active 15 minutes for every hour of screen time and she stresses limiting overall screen time to two hours a day, excluding homework.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Nielsen study says adults in the U.S. consume more than 11 hours of media a day.
